    Question of the Week

What would make some of the issues of teenage life easier to deal with?

Look at our world today...violence, drugs, peer pressure...being a teen is hard and no one listens. I think that class thing would be kool. I think people just need to open their eyez and see what is going on in this world...stop living fantasies...

No judgement, just acceptance and help! A lot of my own personal annoyment with society is how it judges and likes to "rag on" teenagers. I mean, occasionally, you see a newspaper doing a feature on how teenagers are doing something good in the world, like volunteering or whatever, but things like this are more the exception than the rule, and in their 'feature' nature, they imply that instances like this are rare and amazing. I think that personally, I would have a lot easier time approaching others, like adults, for help and guidance if I didn't fear their catagorizing me as a 'troubled teen.' I think that most teenagers, myself included, would have a better time dealing with their own problems themselves if they didn't fear judgement and a negative attitude towards them as a group.

Well, that idea about having a class to discusss issues and all would help anyone, as long as the teacher was competent and as long as we actually opened up to each other. Adult involvement....yeah, that's an important one.

Adult involvement. Teenagers need role models and authority figures, but they also need friends. I have had a couple of great adults in my life-my piano teacher, Carla, and my aunt Tammy. I think that adults, for the most part, understand us but don't choose to get involved in our lives. We don't need mentors always, we need friends of all ages. I greatly enjoy the company of old people I meet. I was walking home from school one day and a woman came outside and just started walking with me. She was slow and probably in her early 80s, and she started asking me about school and how I was doing. While I couldn't share myself completely with her, because I knew we were from very different times, I had a companion for a few minutes who made me extremely happy just by chatting and caring. I wish that adults would get more involved. My 'uncle' Steve, one of my dad's friends, sometimes calls up my little brother to see if he wants to come over and 'play.' Steve is almost 40 yrs. old, but he grasps on to something Seth enjoys doing so that he can become involved in his life. The biggest help when I have problems is knowing someone is there---my piano teacher, Carla, was one of my greatest friends, and she is 15 yrs. older than my parents. We talked about everything, and I know that she is there if I ever have problems. I haven't seen her in a yr., but I can write her a letter and I know she will be there for me. Age boundaries should not exist. Adults and teenagers alike should become more involved in one another's lives. It is amazing how wonderful the presence of an adult is when going through hard times.
