Question of the Week
June 15, 1999
The DiaryProject wants the site to be a place of safety and respect for each of its writers. It is possible to express yourself without using profanity even when you are angry and upset. How do you choose when it is okay and when it isn't okay to use profanity?

I think when people use profanity they are trying to act all tough and cool, while, in reality, they just look ignorant, because it's as if they don't know any other words to use. I think profanity is very disrespectful. mangotango
Profaninty is just showing that that person doesn't have a wide variety in vocabulary and they don't have anything better to say. Plus, they probably got a D in English. I hate profanity. BasketballChick
I agree that one can express anger without using profanity. Why do people choose to say those words anyway? I don't understand it, but somehow people think it's REAL big to use curse words. Waymond
In my opinion, it isn't ok to use profanity on this site...'cause really, all profanity is, is slang and there are lots of more articulate ways to express yourself. You also sound really unintelligent when you just swear a lot, in my opinon. Other than in regard to this site, i think that it's ok to use profanity when you are talking to your friends or people that understand what you mean, but definatly not around little kids or to swear "about" people. Megara
i think it is possible to express yourself, but not completely. when something is really bad or really good.. there are just some words that help to describe it better. i am not saying that you need to go off and list every swear word you know, but one or two usually just helps you out. its just the way that teens express themselves. we should know a limit. and some people just do it to be funny or cool.. which is stupid. andrea
