Diary Deck Night
On May 1st student peer educators from two California High Schools invited parents and teens from the community to spend a couple of hours together talking about and sharing insights relating to what it feels like to be a teen or the parent of a teen. The goal of the evening was to enhance communication and understanding between the two generations through dialogue and discussion - to share out loud some of the things they don’t know about each other and to spend a couple of hours walking in each other’s shoes.
“Where does it say that life has to be this hard? Do adults have a handbook that tells them exactly how to make my life miserable?” excerpted from diaryproject.com
This event was sponsored by The Diary Project ( www.diaryproject.com), a Bay Area non-profit founded in 1995 as a multimedia forum to give teens a safe, anonymous, non judgmental place to share, explore, question, support each other but most of all to discover that they weren't alone in the often confusing teenage right of passage. The Diary Deck Night takes the dialogue from virtual space on the website LIVE ! Students from both schools worked together for a few months planning the evening. They named it “Talk and Dare to Listen : CHAT ROOM LIVE!
The successful website is a place where teens can anonymously publish their innermost thoughts, opinions, hopes and fears arranged in a number of categories including; body image, self harm, relationships and stress. The site is designed so that readers may offer feedback to the writers. It’s become a safe haven where teens can consult an anonymous peer group when they need to, 24/7, or help solve someone else’s problem .
Diary Deck Night puts to use entries written by parents and teens involved in the project as well as The Diary Deck a recently published collection of 75 flash cards, featuring a teen’s anonymous entry excerpted from the website. Along with each entry the cards offer related questions to promote discussion. It is a resource designed to open new lines of communication between parents, teachers and teens. It offers adults a way to engage in dialogue with teens about difficult topics so they can better understand the issues they confront on a daily basis.
Our hope is that these Diary Deck Nights become a focus for many teens and many communities so that the conversations can begin between generations.
“The Diary Project is an excellent place to come , it’s perfect when all you want to do is explode onto the keyboard getting all your feelings out exactly how you want to.” - excerpted from diaryproject.com
